A family in Chelmsley Wood is facing a challenging time after a severe fire destroyed their home, just weeks before they are due to welcome a new baby. The blaze broke out on Sunday evening, 20 September, in a garden on Winchester Drive, affecting five properties and causing extensive damage to one.
The home belonged to a couple, their one-year-old daughter, another relative, and the sister-in-law’s grandfather. The couple were due to have a baby boy within six weeks.
Tega Williams, a family member, has launched an online fundraiser to support them through this difficult period. She described the extent of the damage, explaining that the living room was burnt out and heavily smoke damaged, the fire spread to the roof causing it to collapse, and water used to extinguish the fire left the house soaked through.
The house is now uninhabitable, forcing the family to move into temporary accommodation and leave their belongings behind. The damage is so extensive that it will require a new roof and significant repairs throughout. The family faces the daunting task of rebuilding their home and replacing damaged possessions.
Ms Williams emphasised the emotional impact, noting that instead of preparing for the arrival of their baby, the couple must now focus on recovery from the fire. Thankfully, all occupants escaped safely.
She expressed heartfelt thanks to the fire service, ambulance crews, and police officers for their swift and dedicated response in controlling the blaze and ensuring the family’s safety.
The fundraiser aims to alleviate some of the financial burden by supporting structural repairs and replacement of lost belongings, helping to restore the family’s home and lives.
Ms Williams concluded by acknowledging the community’s support and gratefulness that the family survived. Donations and shares of the fundraiser are welcomed to assist them in this recovery process.
