A coin expert is urging collectors and the public alike to search through old coin tins, as they may hold a rare penny worth over £100,000. This remarkable coin has previously fetched £127,000 at auction and is highly prized among collectors.
In a viral TikTok video, the Coin Collecting Wizard encouraged viewers to keep an eye out for certain old pennies that far exceed their face value. “Your grandparents probably had no idea that the pennies they used daily could now be worth a small fortune,” he explained. “Back then, they were just spending them without knowing some coins today are valued at hundreds or even thousands of pounds.”
At the top of his list is the extraordinarily rare 1933 penny. The Royal Mint minted only around six or seven of these coins, which makes them incredibly scarce. Unlike typical pennies, the 1933 version wasn’t meant for general circulation due to an existing surplus at the time.

The coin’s reverse side showcases Britannia holding a trident, while King George V’s portrait graces the obverse. This special coin was mainly produced for ceremonial purposes—complete sets were buried under foundation stones of buildings constructed that year.
According to the expert, “A 1933 penny can sell for over £100,000.” In fact, one example went under the hammer for £127,000 in 2016, as reported by the Antiques Trade Gazette.
The Royal Mint Museum states, “If you have heard of one rare coin, it’s likely the 1933 penny. Despite many searching through their coins, few have found this elusive piece. It was mainly struck to comply with traditions rather than for circulation, which makes it so rare.”
Aside from the 1933 penny, the video also highlights other valuable coins worth examining. However, the expert cautions that a coin’s condition heavily influences its price.
So before you discard that dusty old coin tin from your grandparents’ attic, take a closer look—you might just uncover an extraordinary treasure.
