Chaos Erupts Outside Mexico City Stadium as World Cup 2026 Opens

Tensions flared outside Mexico City’s iconic Estadio Azteca during the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as Mexico faced South Africa. Reports and social media footage reveal violent protests near Gate 8, with demonstrators allegedly hurling objects, including Molotov cocktails, at riot police.

The unrest comes amid growing dissatisfaction among locals, who claim that the focus on the global event has overshadowed pressing social issues. Just a day before the match, over 1,000 relatives of Mexico’s missing persons marched toward the stadium holding candles and photographs, demanding attention for their cause.

Despite the chaos outside, the game proceeded inside the stadium. However, concerns over access points and crowd safety during the event remain high. In addition to the violent incidents, an elderly fan tragically died from a suspected heart attack near Gate 1 shortly before kickoff. Emergency responders acted swiftly, administering CPR and transporting him to hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.
