Phil Neumann’s impressive finish to last season has eased the urgency for Birmingham City to immediately sign a new left-sided centre-back. However, adding options in that position would still strengthen the squad and provide valuable depth.
Last season, Chris Davies experimented extensively to fit a left-footed defender alongside Christoph Klarer, who prefers playing on the right side. After trials with Jack Robinson, Eiran Cashin, and Jonathan Panzo—none of whom cemented their place—the manager accepted that Neumann was the best partner for Klarer. This is in contrast to Ben Davies’ solid balance alongside Klarer during Birmingham’s League One title-winning season.
Although last year’s recruitment of left-sided centre-backs hasn’t brought the desired stability, the club still needs reliable options for next season. This time, getting it right will be essential.

Here are some Championship-proven candidates who could catch Birmingham City’s eye this summer:
Starting with a long shot, Nathan Kitching was one of the top left-sided defenders in the Championship last season. He featured in 37 of Coventry City’s 46 league matches, playing a key role in their title-winning promotion to the Premier League. Kitching even extended his contract in February. Yet with Coventry stepping up to the Premier League, his starting place could be uncertain. Should his opportunities dwindle, several Championship clubs would be keen to sign him, and Birmingham could be among them.
Another intriguing option is Jack Robinson, naturally right-footed but experienced playing on the left. At Swansea City and Southampton, Robinson developed into a dependable Championship centre-back. Earlier in his career, Russell Martin praised Robinson’s composure, physical presence, and mentality—the traits needed for a strong defender.
Similarly, Luke Nelson isn’t a natural left-footer but has built most of his career playing on that side. After breaking into Leicester City’s squad last season and a loan spell at Oxford United, the 22-year-old has potential as a squad player for a team aiming for promotion.
For a natural left-footed alternative, Marc Binks deserves mention. Though his career post-Tottenham Hotspur youth has involved several moves abroad, including his current role at Brøndby where he’s featured 33 times this season, Binks proved his capabilities during two Championship seasons at Coventry. Known as a progressive passer from the left centre-back spot, Binks matches Birmingham’s data-led recruitment approach.
Finally, seasoned campaigner Carl Gibson could offer valuable experience. Currently with Stoke City, Gibson is 33 and hasn’t played consistently in recent years, but his extensive Championship background and versatility could make him a useful squad member.
In conclusion, Birmingham City has several viable left-sided centre-back options with proven Championship experience. Adding one or two of these defenders could bring the balance and depth the squad needs for next season’s challenges.
