Barry’s Fabrics, a cherished fabric shop in Birmingham with roots dating back to the 1930s Rag Market, is preparing to close its doors permanently this October. Situated on Moseley Street in Digbeth, the family-run business must make way for the upcoming Smithfield Development, signalling the end of a long-standing local institution.
The shop has been under the stewardship of Barry Leon, who took over management from his father in 1977. Barry’s Fabrics originally served customers through the decades by offering a wide selection of dress, craft, and soft furnishing fabrics. These affordable materials have helped generations of Brummies dress their families and decorate their homes.
Before returning to Digbeth in 2000, Barry’s operated from its own premises on Gloucester Street, a move prompted by the redevelopment of the Bullring shopping centre. However, the recent compulsory purchase order issued by Birmingham City Council has left the shop no option but to vacate its current location.

The closure was first announced to loyal customers last spring, eliciting a wave of sadness across the community. Although initially expected to close in 2025, the complexities surrounding the sale of the site accelerated the timeline, bringing the final day into focus.
Barry’s Fabrics has urged customers to visit before the end of October to bid farewell to the business, which will soon mark nearly 100 years of trading. The shop described its closure as “the end of an era for Barry’s and Birmingham.”
Responses from the local community underscore the impact Barry’s has had. One follower, Helena, remarked: “Very sad news but what a legacy Barry’s Fabrics has had - all good things must come to an end I guess.” Meanwhile, shopper Mandy Shone shared: “This is just too sad. Been shopping with the lovely ladies at Barry’s for dance and production costumes for around 26 years.”
Barry’s Fabrics currently operates Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm, and Saturdays from 10am to 5:30pm, closed Sundays and Mondays. The shop is located at 1 Moseley Street, Digbeth, B5 6JX.
