Clanfield, a quaint village in Oxfordshire located about 90 minutes from Birmingham, is facing an unexpected crisis. The surge of visitors, including celebrities and social media personalities flocking to the Double Red Duke boutique hotel and the neighbouring Mason’s Arms pubs, has led to chronic parking issues that are disrupting daily life for locals.
These establishments have rapidly become famed hotspots, drawing well-known personalities such as Kate Moss and Jeremy Clarkson since their takeover in 2021. While their popularity has boosted the local economy, it has also created significant problems for residents. Many villagers report obstructed driveways, cars parked dangerously on pavements, and an overall “wall to wall” parking situation that has resulted in traffic congestion and safety hazards, particularly on weekends.
Residents report a hostile atmosphere when raising concerns, with one noting that visitors even reverse into private driveways, often responding abusively to complaints. To protect their properties, some residents have resorted to placing cones and bollards outside their homes.

The parking chaos is more than a minor inconvenience. Older residents have expressed frustration over access difficulties and worry about how these parking issues may affect property values. One long-time resident shared memories of needing to demonstrate adequate parking space when applying for home extensions, contrasting sharply with current weekend conditions where safe access to homes is routinely blocked.
Local authorities are beginning to respond; Oxfordshire County Council has sent out enforcement officers after receiving complaints from Clanfield Parish Council. However, villagers feel that more action is needed to manage the problem before it further impacts the village’s character and safety.
Despite the challenges, Giles Horton, chair of the Parish Council, notes that the pub operators are making efforts to encourage proper parking, though he acknowledges the difficulty in controlling visitor behavior fully.
The escalating problem has sparked serious consideration amongst some residents about relocating, highlighting how celebrity-driven popularity, while economically beneficial, can also strain small communities beyond their capacity to cope.
