The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office has confirmed the cause of death of renowned Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. The couple was found dead in their Brentwood home on Sunday.
Forensic pathologists determined that Rob and Michele Reiner died from multiple sharp force injuries, confirming suspicions of a violent crime. The tragic discovery marked the beginning of a complex investigation that has captured national attention.
Their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, was arrested and charged with the double homicide. Making his first court appearance on Wednesday, Nick waived his right to enter a plea at his arraignment. The court proceedings revealed that Nick appeared without a shirt and in shackles, wearing a suicide prevention vest.

Nick’s attorney, Alan Jackson, described the situation as involving “complex and serious issues” and urged the public to withhold judgment while the case unfolds.
According to reports, the couple was found in bed with their throats slit, indicating a brutal nighttime attack. Their daughter Romy discovered Rob’s body, and paramedics later confirmed Michele’s death. Sources suggest the rigor mortis evident on their bodies indicated they had been deceased for several hours before being found.
In a heartfelt joint statement, their children Romy and Jake expressed their profound grief: “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
They continued, “We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life. We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
Earlier, a family spokesperson had also issued a statement expressing profound sorrow and requesting privacy during this devastating time.
