No one enjoys paying taxes, but some go to extraordinary lengths to avoid their responsibilities. In Birmingham, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has named and shamed 15 individuals and businesses for deliberately defaulting on tax bills exceeding £25,000.
Among those listed are a takeaway restaurant, a newsagent, a consultant plastic surgeon, and a car sales company. The largest tax debt belongs to a Birmingham-based management consultancy, which owes an eye-watering £87.4 million in unpaid taxes between February 2019 and January 2024.
Kevin Hubbard, HMRC’s Director of Individuals and Small Business Compliance, emphasized the crackdown: “We are actively tackling tax non-compliance among high street businesses across the UK, and today’s disclosures underline our commitment to act decisively wherever we find deliberate tax evasion. Everyone named had the opportunity to come forward with a full disclosure, but chose not to. HMRC will continue to pursue those who deliberately refuse to pay what they owe.”
