Care Provider Abruptly Withdraws Services, Leaving Vulnerable Birmingham Residents in Crisis

A Birmingham-based care provider, Just Call 4 Care (JC4C) Services, has unexpectedly ceased its home care and supported living services, impacting approximately 130 vulnerable residents. The sudden withdrawal has left some clients, including an 82-year-old Kingstanding pensioner, in precarious situations—he was forced to spend a night on his sofa after replacement carers did not arrive.

Contracted by Birmingham City Council, JC4C informed the authority on Friday, January 16, that it could no longer deliver the care services. This disruption has placed immense strain on families and emergency support systems.

The affected pensioner, who suffered two strokes last year, relies on carers to assist with daily activities such as getting dressed and eating. His daughter, from Walsall, expressed her concerns to BirminghamLive, describing the situation as “complete disarray.” She reported that the carers, who had been providing attentive care, ceased their visits abruptly. Although her family rallied to support him, she noted, “A lot of vulnerable people don’t have family support, so it’s a desperate situation.”

After the incident, the council arranged for a new care provider to take over, with new carers attending to the pensioner over the weekend. However, the daughter emphasized the pressure the replacement firm faces due to a sudden increase in patients, saying, “This new firm have had patients double overnight, so must be struggling to cope to provide a safe service.” She questioned the abruptness of the care provider’s decision and the lack of prior communication.

In response, a Birmingham City Council spokesperson stated: “We were informed by Just Call 4 Care Services on Friday afternoon that they could no longer provide care services. Emergency support was immediately put in place for around 130 residents for the coming days, as we make long-term arrangements. Within hours, officers had managed to put alternative short-term arrangements in place for all residents affected by this situation, which will continue until long-term support can be identified to ensure there’s no further disruption to this vital service.”

Just Call 4 Care Services is headquartered on Hagley Road, Edgbaston, and its last Care Quality Commission assessment in May 2025 rated the company as “requires improvement.”
