As A-level students prepare to receive their exam results, the issue of student loan repayments has come under renewed scrutiny. The Conservative Party has called on Labour Party Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Chancellor John Healey to cap student loan interest rates at the inflation level, specifically as measured by the UK Retail Price Index (RPI).
The Tories have criticised the current tuition fee system, labelling it “unfair” and detrimental to young people’s futures. They argue that many graduates are burdened with substantial debt and face poor employment prospects as a result of their university courses.
Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott addressed Prime Minister Burnham directly, stating: “We need to stop funnelling young people into university courses that leave them saddled with debt and with no job prospects. Our New Deal for Young People aims to address this by scrapping these courses, doubling apprenticeships, and reforming student loan debts.”

Trott emphasised the need for more diverse choices for 18-year-olds, critiquing Labour’s approach as insufficient. She added, “Young people deserve a better deal and they are being let down by Labour. Despite criticisms from Education Secretary Lucy Powell about an ‘over focus’ on academic standards, such focus has driven up educational outcomes and improved opportunities, especially for disadvantaged students.”
She also highlighted concerns about the youth job market, saying, “Labour’s policies have damaged prospects for young people, contributing to a youth unemployment crisis. Rather than improving opportunities, Labour tends to blame schools for these failures while ignoring welfare and business regulations that hinder progress.”
Shadow Minister for Policy Development Neil O’Brien voiced similar concerns: “Young people are being sold a raw deal, graduating with heavy debt and struggling to find good jobs. Ministers must move beyond discussion and take action to fix student debt and enhance prospects. Our New Deal for Young People proposes scrapping real interest on student loans, eliminating ‘debt trap’ degrees, doubling apprenticeships, and creating genuine opportunities for young people to succeed.”
The Conservative Party’s proposals aim to reshape post-secondary education and apprenticeship pathways to offer more practical and financially sustainable options for young people entering the workforce.
