Call to Lower State Pension Age to 60 Gains Momentum with Thousands Supporting Petition

Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister from the Labour Party, has been urged to consider reducing the state pension age to 60, a change that could positively impact millions of people. This call follows the launch of a petition advocating for a reduction in the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) pension age and a corresponding increase in pension payments.

The petition, created by Denver Johnson and supported by over 7,000 individuals so far, proposes that the state pension age be lowered to 60 and the pension amount be raised to the equivalent of 48 hours per week at the National Living Wage. It aims to secure a universal state pension of approximately £610.08 per week or around £31,724.16 annually from April 2026 for all eligible individuals, including expatriates.

The petition expresses concern over current government policy, suggesting it treats the state pension as a benefit that excludes many by consistently increasing the age of entitlement. It calls for reforms to make the state pension more accessible and secure, ensuring it is available from age 60 and linked to the National Living Wage.

If the petition reaches 10,000 signatures, the government will be required to respond. Should it reach 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in Parliament. The petition remains open until 10 August 2026.

Members of the public can check their state pension age to determine when they are eligible to receive their pension, as well as find out how much they can receive and ways to increase it.

Additional support is available for those over state pension age who have a low income, including Pension Credit to assist with living costs. Older individuals are also eligible for benefits such as a free bus pass, assistance with housing costs through Housing Benefit, and a free or discounted TV licence under certain conditions.

For further details, individuals are encouraged to consult relevant government resources and websites to understand their entitlements and apply for available benefits.
