British Gas Urges Customers to Switch for £246 Annual Savings Without a Smart Meter

British Gas customers are being encouraged to take advantage of significant savings on their energy bills, with deals offering up to £300 in annual reductions. Money Saving Expert (MSE), founded by consumer finance expert Martin Lewis, recently revealed these special offers as part of its Big Energy Switch campaign.

The weekly MSE newsletter explains that British Gas, alongside small supplier Fuse, is offering fixed-rate energy tariffs priced up to 16% below the current Ofgem Price Cap. These tariffs are targeted at both new and existing British Gas customers and do not require a smart meter installation.

Martin Lewis emphasizes, “Our British Gas deal significantly undercuts the company’s own cheapest direct tariff, and existing customers are eligible too—even if they’re already on a fixed plan.”

The offer is limited to the first 20,000 switches and includes an early exit fee of £50, providing price certainty without the need for a smart meter. The Ofgem price cap for typical dual-fuel households paying by direct debit is £1,758 per year from January to March 2026. A 14% saving under this cap translates to approximately £246 in annual savings.

Lewis further explains, “This is our second Collective Switch since the energy crisis began, where energy suppliers compete to provide special discounted rates below their usual market offers. Millions of households remain on expensive standard tariffs linked to the Price Cap, missing out on potential savings.”

He also notes the timing is advantageous as government plans to reduce certain underlying energy costs—referred to as the April ‘£150 off bills’ cut—will lower the Price Cap and reduce rates even for many customers on existing fixed tariffs.

MSE states, “Currently, these deals are cheaper on average usage than all other available market fixes, saving around 14.1% including cashback compared to the Jan-March Price Cap—a rare find for a major supplier.”
