British Gas Erroneously Transfers £38,000 to Household Account

A UK household received an unexpected payment of £38,000 from British Gas due to a billing error, prompting concerns about the handling of such mistakes by the energy supplier. The incident was brought to light when the affected customer reached out to the consumer affairs section of the Guardian newspaper for assistance.

The customer explained that they usually receive quarterly feed-in tariff (FiT) payments for the energy exported back to the grid by their solar panels. During May, a claim was submitted for £300 based on meter readings, but instead, an email notified the customer of a payment of £38,611.59, which was deposited into their bank account the following day and remained for more than seven weeks.

Despite numerous calls and written enquiries to British Gas, the customer was met with confusion and a lack of clear procedure for rectifying the overpayment. The customer expressed discomfort knowing the funds were unlawfully received and feared potential implications related to fraud. The incorrect payment was eventually withdrawn from the account approximately one week prior to the customer’s report. However, British Gas has yet to confirm receipt of the returned funds.

Additionally, the customer highlighted that the rightful £300 FiT payment remains outstanding.

British Gas’s official guidelines on their website note that having a small surplus balance is commonplace, particularly during summer months, as it balances out higher energy costs in winter. The company states refunds are only issued if the credit significantly exceeds the annual energy use, in which case customers are informed of any refundable amount and can confirm to initiate repayment. Refunds are usually processed within 5-8 working days to the bank account linked to the customer’s Direct Debit.

This incident raises questions about how British Gas manages exceptional payment errors and communicates with customers when unexpected large sums are involved.
