British Gas Announces New Plug-In Solar Panel Options for Renters and Flat Dwellers

British Gas has announced a significant update targeting customers living in flats or homes with balconies, terraces, or small outdoor spaces. The energy supplier highlights plug-in solar panels—also known as plug and play or balcony solar panels—as a simple and accessible way for households to cut their energy costs.

These compact solar kits are designed for easy installation: users simply place the panels on a balcony, terrace, or shed roof and connect the inverter into a standard 3-pin socket. This setup allows them to generate their own electricity instantly, reducing the amount they need to buy from the grid.

Plug-in solar panels offer an affordable, low-commitment introduction to renewable energy, making them ideal for renters and small-home residents who might lack space for traditional solar installations. British Gas notes that upcoming government changes to wiring regulations will permit systems under 800 watts to connect safely to domestic sockets without professional electrician installation. This change is expected to be implemented by summer 2026.

Retailers, including Lidl, are preparing to make these plug-in solar solutions available in UK stores within months. This move follows widespread adoption of balcony solar technology in Europe; for example, Germany registered more than 426,000 such systems in 2025 alone.

Chris O’Shea, CEO of Centrica, the parent company of British Gas, welcomes these developments, emphasizing their alignment with the Future Homes Standard. He explains that new homes equipped from the start with low-carbon heating, solar, and smart technology can significantly reduce energy consumption.

British Gas also stresses that savings from plug-in solar panels will vary depending on individual home setups and energy usage but notes that these systems effectively lower electricity purchased from the grid during daylight hours.

With this initiative, British Gas underscores its commitment to supporting cleaner, more affordable energy solutions and helping keep UK homes warm and energy-efficient.
