Marcus Carlton, a courageous survivor from Birmingham, has opened up exclusively about the devastating impact of his abuse at the hands of William Douglas, a convicted child sex offender. Carlton was only 16 when Douglas first targeted him in 1989, a trauma that drastically altered the course of his life.
Speaking without anonymity for the first time, the 52-year-old recalls how the abuse affected his mental health, education, and relationships. “I was doing my GCSEs when he first approached me. At the time, I was lost, just finishing school and unsure of my future,” Marcus shared. He described how Douglas offered him a drink and manipulated him into situations that quickly escalated into abuse in a sparse, unwelcoming flat in Hockley.
Douglas, now 58, was convicted in June of multiple counts of sexual abuse involving Marcus and another victim, whom he trafficked and prostituted as a child. The court sentenced Douglas to 14 years in prison.

Despite his traumatic history, Carlton never told his strict parents about the abuse, fearing blame and misunderstanding. Instead, he struggled silently, dropping out of college, abusing alcohol, and drifting into a troubled lifestyle. “I couldn’t believe I’d let myself get into that situation. My mental health suffered, and I found it hard to hold down a job,” Marcus revealed.
Two years ago, Marcus recognized Douglas’ face during a police appeal and bravely contacted authorities to help bring him to justice and protect others. “I want people to see his face. Maybe it will encourage more victims to come forward,” he said.
The legal process has been a painful journey of healing and reflection for Marcus. “I grieved for the person I was before it happened because everything changed after.”
His powerful testimony underscores the enduring scars of abuse and the importance of speaking out to ensure justice and safeguard others.
