Bournville Village Children’s Festival Returns with Safer, Earlier Finish

The much-loved Bournville Village Children’s Festival is making a comeback this year—but with a significant change aimed at ensuring a peaceful, family-friendly environment. Following incidents of unrest at past events, organizers have decided to discontinue the fireworks display and will conclude the festival earlier than usual at 6 p.m.

In recent years, the festival faced challenges due to gatherings of large groups of teenagers, resulting in clashes and safety concerns. Last June, the event’s fireworks finale was canceled after trouble erupted, injuring a security worker and leading to the arrest of a 13-year-old girl. The previous year saw the entire event at Cadbury Recreation Ground cut short for similar reasons.

Responding to community feedback, organizers are reverting to the festival’s original name—Bournville Village Children’s Festival—and emphasizing its traditional activities, such as the much-loved Maypole dances. The event will open at midday and feature family-friendly attractions and rides, better suited to younger children.

To further support safety, all children under ten must be accompanied by a ticket-holding adult, and those under 18 must be supervised by an adult throughout the festival.

The exact date of the festival is yet to be announced, but these changes reflect a strong commitment to preserving the festival’s heritage while ensuring a secure and welcoming atmosphere for families.
