A volunteer at Bolton Hospice charity shop in Astley Bridge was stunned to uncover a rare and valuable piece among a recent batch of donations. Catherine, who dedicates her time sorting items and managing the shop’s eBay auctions, found a striking metal tiger sculpture that piqued her curiosity.
Upon further investigation, Catherine identified the piece as an original limited edition sculpture by renowned Shropshire-based artist Matt Buckley Edge. The tiger bust is one of only 250 crafted by the artist at his Edge Sculpture studio. Known for his bold and primal designs, Buckley Edge created this hand-painted bust as part of a special edition for the Tiger Territory at ZSL London Zoo. The collection was designed to raise awareness about the critically endangered Sumatran tiger, of which fewer than 300 remain in the wild.
The bust, numbered 135 out of 250, was described as “a bit dusty but otherwise in excellent condition” and accompanied by the artist’s hand-signed signature. Listed on the hospice’s eBay page due to anticipated national interest, it attracted 35 bids before selling on May 17 for £2,500.

Catherine expressed her excitement about the discovery, saying, “Volunteering really is a great way to support the hospice, and finding this gem has been truly thrilling.” This sale marked the highest price the hospice has ever achieved on eBay, surpassing previous notable sales including an original print by Tracy Emin.
The fortunate buyer shared their enthusiasm, praising the transaction and the charity: “I am glad the money is heading to a fantastic charity. Fab communication and perfect transaction. Even better than I had imagined.”
The Bolton Hospice charity shop continues to offer a diverse range of items through their online auctions, including first edition Harry Potter books, vintage 1930s art deco furniture, and a Citizen Promaster Wingman watch, all supporting a worthy cause.
