Five bus routes in Birmingham, extensively used by thousands of passengers daily, have been identified as having the highest levels of crime in the city. According to data disclosed by West Midlands Police following a Freedom of Information request, the routes 11, 14, 50, 74, and 97 stand out as the most affected.
The police reports indicate that the period between 3pm and 7pm is when bus-related crimes most frequently occur. The data highlights hundreds of offences recorded each year on Birmingham buses, with a notable increase in certain categories over recent years. For instance, sexual offences recorded in 2022 numbered 79, more than triple the 22 offences reported in 2020. Similarly, compared to 63 incidents in 2021, these figures show a concerning upward trend.
Violence against the person offences have also risen significantly, from 202 recorded in 2020 to 416 in 2023. However, West Midlands Police clarified that these statistics are based only on incidents where a bus number was specifically recorded at the time by officers. Therefore, they do not represent every crime committed on buses.

Beyond Birmingham, bus stations in Wolverhampton, Coventry, West Bromwich, and Walsall have been identified as having the highest number of recorded offences across the broader West Midlands area.
Police also addressed concerns about late-night bus services, stating that these are “not typically the most problematic aspect of public transport.” Nonetheless, they acknowledge challenges such as disruptions linked to passengers influenced by alcohol, along with issues concerning non-paying passengers and rough sleepers using buses for shelter.
In response, National Express has initiated revenue operations to improve fare compliance, which contributes to safer and more reliable services. Police emphasised that paying passengers generally behave respectfully and considerately.
To enhance safety, targeted police operations and patrols are regularly conducted, especially on Fridays and Saturdays, when bus usage and the likelihood of incidents increase. These efforts aim to reduce antisocial behaviour and criminal activity, ensuring a safer travel experience for all passengers.
