A touching invitation has been sent by the mother of Sophie Birkin, a courageous nine-year-old girl from Stourbridge battling serious health challenges, to her football idol, Birmingham’s own Jack Grealish. Sophie’s birthday surprise could become unforgettable if the footballer accepts.
Diagnosed at just 10 weeks old with hydrocephalus—a dangerous build-up of fluid in the brain requiring multiple surgeries—and cerebral palsy, Sophie has spent much of her young life in hospitals. Cerebral palsy, which affects movement and coordination, is a condition she shares with Jack Grealish’s younger sister.
Sophie’s mother, Sarah Foley, describes living “on a knife’s edge” due to the unpredictable nature of her daughter’s health, with hospital visits always looming and a packed hospital bag ready at all times. Sophie has undergone three brain surgeries already, with the potential for more in the future.

Sarah shared with BirminghamLive the importance of creating joyful moments for Sophie amidst ongoing difficulties. “I can’t wave a magic wand, but if I can brighten her life with moments like this, that’s what matters,” she said. Sophie’s strength and positivity shine through her daily battles, often unnoticed behind her brave smile.
