Birmingham’s popular Frankfurt Christmas Market, a festive highlight in the city, will be operating on a shorter schedule this year with an important change to its opening date.
Last year, the market was open from Saturday, 1 November, running through to Christmas Eve on 24 December. This year, however, visitors should note that the market will officially open later, on Thursday, 5 November.
This shift means that opening weekend will coincide with Remembrance Sunday, on 8 November, the only Sunday throughout the festive season when the market will have a delayed start. On this day, the market will open from 1pm instead of the usual 10am or 11am openings.
Throughout the season, the market hours will be as follows: Monday to Thursday from 11am to 9pm; Fridays and Saturdays from 11am until 9.30pm; Sundays generally from 10am to 9pm, with the exception of the delayed opening on 8 November.
Remembrance Sunday is marked by a special service in Birmingham’s city centre, including a march and procession on Colmore Row, typically beginning around 10:15am with music by the Salvation Army Band. The event culminates in a two-minute silence at 11am, ending with a Bugler’s Reveille at 11:02am.
In addition, visitors to the city during the festive period might also want to explore the Cathedral Square Christmas Market, situated on Pigeon Park, which opens on the same day as the Frankfurt Market, 5 November.
The Cathedral Square market will operate for 50 days, open from 11am to 9pm Monday to Wednesday, with extended hours until 9.30pm from Thursday to Saturday. On Sundays, it opens at midday and closes at 9pm. The market’s final day is Christmas Eve, when it will be open from 11am to 7pm.
