Birmingham’s Busiest Bus Lanes Catch Nearly 45,000 Drivers Fining This Year

Nearly 45,000 drivers have been caught violating bus lane restrictions on Birmingham’s Moor Street Queensway so far this year. The high number of offences suggests that many motorists find the rules confusing or are unaware of the restrictions.

Two bus lanes on Moor Street Queensway continue to be the worst offenders. One runs southbound towards Digbeth near the Bullring, while the other heads northbound toward Carrs Lane. Each month, approximately 2,500 drivers illegally enter each lane, with recorded offences reaching 24,294 towards Digbeth and 20,038 towards Carrs Lane up to the end of October, according to data obtained by BirminghamLive.

Although city council officials maintain that these bus lanes are not designed to generate revenue, the fines have become a significant source of income in recent years. Cameras positioned along these routes vigilantly capture motorists who inadvertently or deliberately break the rules.

While some offences may be intentional, many arise from confusion, wrong turns, or unclear signage. Drivers are urged to carefully observe road signs, especially on unfamiliar city centre roads, and to allow ample time to change lanes or make turns to avoid inadvertently entering bus lanes.

Additionally, thousands of motorists have been penalised on new bus lanes along Broad Street, Birmingham’s well-known entertainment district. These lanes were enforced for the first full year in 2024 following new regulations introduced at the end of last year.
