Jay Kaur, a 53-year-old counselling therapist from Birmingham, experienced a life-altering shock when she was diagnosed with breast cancer on the very day of her niece’s wedding. Initially, doctors had dismissed the lump she found on her left breast in 2021 as “nothing to worry about.” Despite this reassurance, Jay was referred for further tests due to her age.
She recalls, “They didn’t think it was much. They sent me to a clinic for ultrasound and biopsy. They called it a fibroadenoma, and the consultant gave me a leaflet saying it was likely nothing serious.”
Feeling confident, Jay told her partner there was no need to accompany her. However, upon arrival, a specialist cancer nurse was waiting to deliver unexpected news. “All of a sudden they said, ‘We’re really sorry to say that you have breast cancer.’ My world just stopped, and I broke down in tears.”

Despite the devastating diagnosis occurring just hours before the family wedding, Jay resolved to not let it overshadow the day. “After my partner asked what we should do, I said, ‘I’m going to the wedding.’ I got dressed, danced, ate, drank,” she said. Yet, the emotional weight led her to seek quiet moments of tears in the bathroom before rejoining the celebrations.
Following her diagnosis, Jay underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy — a journey she describes as “very, very difficult.” Sharing the news with her parents remains one of the toughest moments. Nevertheless, her determination to live fully remained unwavering. Defying medical advice, she ran a half marathon during treatment, celebrated her 50th birthday before receiving the all-clear, and completed the London Marathon six months after finishing treatment.
Now, nearly five years later, Jay participated in Breast Cancer Now’s annual fashion show in London, celebrating survivorship. “This was a chance to show everyone I love that I’m living my life. People don’t realize how much it changes you. I’ve completely transformed as a person.”
Jay Kaur’s story is a powerful testament to resilience, hope, and the courage to embrace life despite immense challenges.
