An inquest has shed light on the tragic death of June Cartwright, an 88-year-old woman from Erdington, Birmingham, who died after experiencing a severe allergic reaction to the antibiotic amoxicillin while being treated at Good Hope Hospital.
The coroner’s report detailed that Mrs. Cartwright was administered amoxicillin during her hospital stay when she suddenly developed an anaphylactic reaction—a serious and potentially life-threatening allergic response. Despite immediate medical intervention, she unfortunately did not survive.
This case underscores the critical importance of thorough patient history assessments and vigilant monitoring when administering antibiotics, particularly in elderly patients with potential drug sensitivities. Healthcare professionals are reminded to remain alert to the signs of allergic reactions to ensure patient safety.
