Birmingham Teen’s Trust Fund Car Crushed After Dad’s Brief ‘Test Drive’

In Birmingham, a teenager’s first car, purchased using his child trust fund, was destroyed after his father took it for a brief unauthorized drive. Alexis Fox and his 18-year-old son had bought a second-hand Audi A3 while the son awaited his provisional licence. Unfortunately, the car never made it beyond a half-mile test drive without incident.

On June 2, Fox, 46, was caught by a mobile police patrol on Princethorpe Road just a short distance from his home. Police discovered Fox was driving while disqualified and that the vehicle lacked insurance. He was taken into custody for several hours.

West Midlands Police subsequently seized the Audi and gave Fox 14 days to collect the car from a compound. However, the car was later crushed, leaving the teenager without his eagerly anticipated vehicle.

At Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, Fox pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and driving without third-party insurance. He was fined £80, ordered to pay £32 in victim surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs, and had his driving ban extended by six months—prohibiting him from driving until December 2027.

Fox’s solicitor explained that Fox “foolishly agreed” to take a short drive with his son at the son’s insistence. The lawyer emphasized that there was no evidence of reckless driving, and the distance driven was minimal. The incident, however, cost the family dearly, as the car was destroyed despite having been purchased with the son’s savings.

The prosecutor noted Fox’s previous convictions for similar offenses dating back to 2002. The police had initially encountered the vehicle during a routine patrol, noting it was uninsured and subsequently identifying Fox’s disqualified status after a brief pursuit and investigation.

This cautionary tale highlights the serious consequences of driving without a licence or insurance, even when intentions are innocent.
