Birmingham Teen Sentenced After Dangerous Police Chase, Now GPS Monitored

Adeel Khan, a 19-year-old from Bordesley, Birmingham, now faces a criminal record and strict monitoring following a perilous police pursuit earlier this year. On February 26, Khan engaged in a high-risk chase that saw him commit multiple traffic offenses while trying to escape law enforcement.

According to the prosecution, Khan ignored police signals to stop on Waverley Road and initiated a dangerous drive, reaching speeds of up to 50mph in a 20mph zone. During the pursuit, he mounted pavements, ran red lights, overtook vehicles recklessly, and even drove on the wrong side of the road, including circling a roundabout the wrong way. The chase involved several police units as Khan’s Ford Focus collided with another car, causing front bumper damage.

Birmingham Magistrates' Court heard that no injuries resulted from the incident. Khan admitted to charges of dangerous driving, driving without a license, and lacking third-party insurance. Despite the severity of his actions, the court granted him a suspended 12-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months, meaning he will only serve time if he commits another offense during that period.

In addition to the suspended sentence, Khan received a one-year driving ban, a requirement to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, and a rehabilitation program. Crucially, he will be subjected to GPS tracking via an electronic monitoring tag for six months, from March 17 until September 16, 2026, to closely monitor his movements.

The prosecution described Khan’s conduct as a “prolonged, persistent course of driving involving highly dangerous maneuvers” that endangered public safety. The court held that the seriousness of the offenses warranted a custodial sentence, though it was ultimately suspended in favor of rehabilitation and monitoring measures.
