A primary school teacher from Great Barr, Birmingham, has opened up about the often overlooked signs of child poverty she has encountered over her decade-long career.
Speaking anonymously to BirminghamLive, the teacher highlighted several subtle but telling indicators, ranging from dental care issues to the condition of school uniforms and the contents of packed lunches.
“Dental health and access to glasses are key hidden signs,” she explained. “If a child breaks their glasses, it sometimes takes weeks before they get a new pair, or even to be assessed for the need for glasses in the first place because they miss appointments.”

Uniforms also provide clues, particularly the colors and fit. “You’ll notice polo shirts that are meant to be white but appear anything but. Clothes might be too small, worn out, or ill-fitting—these small details say a lot,” she said.
The teacher also recalled instances where children came to school without uniforms, with parents citing cost as a barrier.
Packed lunches often reveal disparities as well. On school trips, some children bring only the bare minimum, while others have ample food. The teacher noted, “Children who aren’t eligible for free school meals but bring very minimal lunches often rely on teachers to ‘top up’ from spare free school meal provisions.”
She continued, “Seeing children finish their lunches quickly because they’re so sparse is heartbreaking. It’s one of the clearest reminders of poverty right in front of us.”
This insider perspective sheds light on the quiet struggles many children face daily and underscores the importance of awareness and support within the education community.
