Birmingham Schoolgirl Suffers Fractured Spine After Being Hit by Unmarked Police Car on Zebra Crossing

A 15-year-old schoolgirl in Birmingham sustained a fractured spine and a head injury after being hit by an unmarked police car while crossing a zebra crossing on Bordesley Green Road. The incident occurred around 8:15 am on Monday, June 15, as she was walking to school.

According to the girl’s mother, who asked to remain anonymous, her daughter was struck by a silver Vauxhall vehicle and thrown into the air before landing on the road. Shocked and frightened, the teenager reportedly tried to move to safety but collapsed again. Instead of immediate medical aid at the scene, officers reportedly placed her in the police car and then escorted her to Heartlands Hospital by ambulance.

The mother expressed frustration over the lack of first aid provided by the officers and the delayed ambulance response, noting that her daughter was bleeding from her head and visibly in shock. She added that the teen’s glasses were broken during the impact, and the vehicle appeared to be traveling at approximately 25 miles per hour, as evident by damage to the car.

At the hospital, the teenager was diagnosed with a spinal fracture and burn injuries. While the injury was not life-threatening, her recovery has been difficult. She remains in significant pain, struggles to walk, and her breathing has been affected due to the spinal compression fracture. As a result, she has been unable to return to school, impacting her GCSE preparations. She also cannot participate in physical activities she enjoyed, such as horse riding.

The family has criticized West Midlands Police for their response, stating there has been minimal communication or official apology. The police reportedly only contacted the mother for updates on the girl’s condition and have since been largely unresponsive. No police officers have reportedly spoken directly with the teenager.

The mother, who holds a degree in medical radiography, expressed dismay at the perceived negligence and lack of first aid knowledge displayed by the officers on scene.

West Midlands Police confirmed the incident and stated their Professional Standards Department is investigating the collision. They remain in contact with the family and have urged anyone with information to come forward, referencing log 1002 of June 25.
