The sudden passing of 38-year-old Birmingham scaffolder Benny Watton has left a profound sense of loss in both his hometown of Birmingham and his adopted community of Torquay. Benny died unexpectedly on 6 August, prompting an outpouring of grief and support from many who knew him.
More than £8,500 has been generously raised to cover funeral arrangements for Benny, whose service is scheduled to take place on 11 September. After relocating from Northfield, Birmingham, to Torquay in 2022, he quickly became an integral and well-loved figure in the Devon seaside town.
Benny was a passionate Birmingham City fan, and it is anticipated that the club will pay tribute to him during their home EFL Cup fixture against Brentford on Tuesday, 25 August.

His mother, Nadia Burke, shared heartfelt memories of her son with BirminghamLive, describing him as a “larger-than-life” individual with an infectious smile and laughter that could “light up a room.” She added, “He was extremely loved. I’ve received probably 1,000 messages, which has been a comfort. Benny had an absolutely beautiful soul, and my heart is broken.”
Nadia highlighted Benny’s generosity, noting how he was known in both Birmingham and Torquay for his kindness and ability to support others through difficult times. “He made an impact on everyone he met,” she said.
Tributes to Benny will continue, including a special event on 28 August at The Hayes cafe and football pitch centre in Kings Norton, where the catering business Zo Co Company will honour his memory by renaming its menu after him.
Reflecting on an incredibly challenging year marked by multiple personal losses, Nadia expressed her deep sorrow yet also her intention to celebrate Benny’s life when the time feels right. She emphasised that his funeral would be “the best send-off ever and a celebration of his life,” rather than a somber wake.
Benny’s legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, and the communities of Birmingham and Torquay continue to grieve his passing while honouring his memory.
