Birmingham Residents Threaten Direct Action Over Months-Long Bin Collection Delay

Residents of Edward Road in Balsall Heath, Birmingham, are voicing serious frustration over an ongoing waste collection issue, warning they may resort to direct action if the mounting rubbish is not cleared promptly.

Tony Kaye, an 82-year-old local resident, revealed that bins have not been emptied since last October. The prolonged neglect has led to a growing “mountain of rubbish” on the street, which has attracted rats and mice, severely impacting the community’s quality of life.

Despite efforts to manage the problem, including visits from professional exterminators to tackle the vermin infestation, the situation continues to worsen. Tony described the persistent presence of rodents, stating they are now a daily nuisance.

He expressed the community’s desperation, saying residents might take drastic measures by placing the accumulated rubbish in the middle of the road to force council action. “Bin men drive past, take a look at our rubbish and drive off. We’re going to take direct action one night and just leave it in the middle of the road,” Tony said. “It will be awful for the street, but we’ve got a mountain of rubbish. That will finally get someone to do something.”

Tony also criticized the inconsistent service prior to the halt in collections, saying, “Before October, it was erratic and you never knew when the bins would be collected. You would keep the bins out all week basically.”

The ongoing waste management failure has caused significant distress among the residents as the infestation and uncollected rubbish begin to affect homes and daily life. Tony concluded, “This is slowly creeping into everything. It’s a real nuisance for us.”

Birmingham City Council has been contacted for comment regarding the situation.
