Birmingham Police Officer Undergoes Surgery After Collision with Illegal E-Scooter Rider

A West Midlands Police officer was seriously injured while attempting to stop a teenage rider illegally operating an e-scooter on Northfield High Street, Birmingham. The incident occurred on February 19 when the e-scooter rider, aged 18 and from Longbridge, tried to evade officers by performing a u-turn, which resulted in a collision with the officer.

The officer, a member of the Guardian Taskforce dedicated to tackling serious youth violence and knife crime, suffered a fractured knee in the collision. He has since undergone surgery and is now on the path to recovery. The Project Guardian Team provided an update, confirming that while a long healing process lies ahead, the officer remains in good spirits.

Following the incident, the 18-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of wounding, dangerous driving, and failing to stop for police. The e-scooter involved was seized as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the event and has not yet come forward to contact authorities, referencing incident number 2540 from February 19.
