A 39-year-old man from Birmingham has been sentenced after an incident in which he assaulted his partner’s father during a domestic dispute. The defendant reportedly hit the victim in the head with a glass and then put him in a headlock, causing cuts to his head, Birmingham Magistrates Court was told.
Prosecutor Ms Mehnaz Mallik explained that the altercation followed an argument between the defendant and his partner. The partner called her father to the scene, at which point the assault occurred. Ms Mallik said the victim was struck on the head with a glass and placed in a headlock, resulting in injuries. Another individual, the father’s partner, also suffered injuries after being hit by a plate thrown during the incident on 11 August 2025.
In his defence, Mr Alum Zeb described the events leading up to the incident, stating that the defendant was unwell and that a verbal altercation took place. He emphasised that the glass was not deliberately used as a weapon, but that items were thrown during the disturbance, with the father’s partner also being injured in the fracas.

The defence highlighted the defendant’s role as a “family man” and a committed father, who was emotional and remorseful when reflecting on the incident. The court was told that the defendant would have handled matters differently if given the opportunity.
The man pleaded guilty to two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He was sentenced to an 18-month community order to run until February 2028, which includes 180 hours of unpaid work and 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days. He was also ordered to pay £85 in court costs, £75 in compensation to each victim, and a £114 victim surcharge.
Additionally, the court imposed an 18-month restraining order preventing contact with the victims. It was noted that a non-molestation order was already in place against the defendant prior to sentencing.
