A violent altercation unfolded in Birmingham when Carl Gloster, 58, assaulted his sister in the wake of a family dispute triggered by the news of their brother’s death. The incident, which left the victim with serious injuries, was detailed in Birmingham Magistrates' Court on July 6.
Prosecutor Mrs. Begum explained that Gloster sent abusive messages to his sister on April 28, 2024, after years of estrangement. The siblings had not spoken for seven years until that day, when Gloster’s texts reignited tensions. The victim, prompted by the exchange and words exchanged online, went to confront her brother at his home.
Upon her arrival, Gloster physically attacked her, grabbing her by the throat and throwing her to the ground, according to testimony. The victim sustained four fractured ribs and soft tissue injuries, requiring medical treatment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Defending lawyer Johnson Fadimu acknowledged Gloster’s remorse, attributing the violent outburst to the emotional strain caused by their brother’s death. Fadimu noted the impact the incident had on the family, including Gloster’s wife. He added that Gloster wishes to sever ties with his sister permanently.
Gloster was found guilty at trial after denying the charges. The panel of magistrates described the assault as “very serious” and imposed a 12-month custodial sentence, suspended for 18 months. Additional penalties include 30 rehabilitation days, 150 hours of unpaid work, £650 in court costs, a £187 surcharge, and £200 in compensation to the victim.
