A Birmingham man has been sentenced to 120 hours of unpaid work after admitting to carrying a folding pocket knife during a police search in the city centre.
Tyrese Wright, 24, appeared at Birmingham Magistrates' Court where he pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article. The court heard that the knife was discovered on Wright during a search conducted on 8 May this year, which was originally for another matter.
Prosecutor Mehnaz Mallik described the case as straightforward. She told the court, “It is a simple matter of a bladed article being found on the defendant, who admitted ownership during the search.”

Defence counsel Ms Garcha noted Wright’s early guilty plea and cooperation with police. She also stated that the knife was at no point brandished. “The defendant accepts having the blade in his pocket when approached by police and voluntarily disclosed this information,” she said.
Wright, who has no previous convictions and lives on Deelands Road, Birmingham, was given a 12-month community order. This includes 20 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days and 120 hours of unpaid work.
In addition to the community sentence, Wright was ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a victim surcharge of £114. A deprivation order for the knife was also imposed.
