A Birmingham man has been fined after admitting to stealing from a B&M Bargains store, with his legal representative emphasising that he requires support rather than punishment.
Lee Dolphin, aged 51 and from Coventry Road, Sheldon, pleaded guilty at Birmingham Magistrates' Court to stealing 12 Dairy Milk chocolate bars valued at £60 in July, as well as a Starbucks drink in a separate incident in August this year.
The court was informed that Dolphin is currently receiving voluntary assistance from Change Grow Live, a local drug treatment service, as part of efforts to address underlying issues.

During the hearing on Tuesday, 22 September, Dolphin was ordered to pay compensation to B&M Bargains, together with an £80 fine and a £32 victim surcharge. It was noted that these amounts will be deducted from his Universal Credit payments at a rate of £20 per month.
Prosecuting barrister Ms Riaz highlighted that Dolphin has ten prior convictions, eight of which relate to theft offences, and stated these should be considered when determining the sentence.
Representing Dolphin, solicitor Mr Hassan explained that his client has been engaging with Change Grow Live for several weeks with support from a police officer. He added that Dolphin’s last conviction was earlier this year and that he had remained out of trouble until recent family difficulties led to the current offences.
“He is receiving help for drug use and is committed to further treatment,” Mr Hassan said. “He made a full and frank admission during police interview, and I submit respectfully that he needs help, not punishment.”
The magistrates took into account Dolphin’s circumstances and the ongoing support he is receiving when issuing the sentence.
