Birmingham man caught without ticket found dealing drugs to fund habit

A Birmingham man has admitted to supplying drugs after being caught travelling on a train without a valid ticket, a court heard.

Mohammed Ammar, aged 22, from Walnut Mews, Weoley Castle, was stopped at Selly Oak train station on 1 April last year for travelling without a ticket. When rail staff requested his details, Ammar refused to provide them, prompting police involvement.

During the stop, officers detected a strong smell of cannabis and Ammar confessed to smoking two hours earlier. Police found 16 grams of cannabis and £16.13 in cash on his person, along with two mobile phones. A subsequent search of his home uncovered an additional 51 grams of cannabis, dealer bags, digital scales, and a cannabis grinder.

Messages on Ammar’s mobile phones indicated discussions concerning the availability of drugs. Prosecutor Ms Begum stated the evidence showed Ammar played a “significant role” in drug dealing between January and April.

Ammar pleaded guilty to being concerned in the supply of a Class B drug on 4 August 2023. It was noted he had one previous conviction and was subject to a court order at the time of the offence.

In mitigation, Mr Winstance described Ammar as a young man primarily dealing to support his own habit, highlighting that he had never been imprisoned before. Sentencing was postponed to allow for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.
