A Birmingham man was spared prison after being caught carrying a machete at a bus stop on Soho Road, Handsworth. Tariq Francis, 22, admitted to carrying the weapon, which he said was meant to deter attackers following previous incidents.
On June 15, Francis was standing with friends when he saw police approaching and attempted to flee, discarding the machete during the chase. Officers quickly recovered the weapon in the street. He pleaded guilty to possession of a knife at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on July 21.
Francis was handed a six-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay court costs totaling £239, which his emotional mother immediately agreed to cover. During sentencing, the magistrate acknowledged the support of Francis’s mother and urged him to reconsider his choices to avoid future trouble with the law.
Francis explained to probation officers that the machete was carried for self-protection after being attacked in the past. His solicitor, who traveled from Bristol to represent him, described Francis as a young man struggling with maturity and poor influences from old acquaintances following his return from time away in Jamaica and London.
With a previous conviction for carrying a knife but having stayed out of trouble for five years, Francis has recently relapsed into risky behavior. The magistrates urged him to use the suspended sentence as a chance to change course and build a better future, emphasizing the rare support he has from his solicitor and mother.
