Birmingham is unique in hosting both one of the UK’s highest-rated and one of its lowest-rated universities according to Google reviews.
The University of Birmingham ranks 18th among 138 UK universities, achieving an impressive average Google rating of 4.55. In contrast, University College Birmingham falls significantly lower, positioned 123rd with a rating of 3.95. Between these two extremes, three additional Birmingham-based universities occupy positions scattered across the rankings.
These rankings come from an analysis by Parents Resource, a college scholarship advisory group that assessed 138 UK universities. This study included every institution with at least 100 Google reviews, revealing that the average rating for UK universities stands at 4.31.

It is important to note that on many older campuses, Google reviewers are often visitors rather than students, meaning these ratings reflect public perception rather than direct evaluation of teaching quality.
Nearby institutions such as Warwick University, located just outside Birmingham, rank 11th nationally with a 4.58 average rating, while Coventry University is ranked 111th with a rating of 4.07.
A college scholarship expert at Parents Resource commented: “Having five universities in one city with such a wide range of ratings – 105 positions apart – shows the diversity present. Since these star ratings are public profile averages, prospective students should read individual reviews carefully before using them to inform their university choices.”
