The National Education Union (NEU) is calling on the Prime Minister to extend free school meals to all primary school children across England, with Birmingham executive headteacher Tania Yasmin lending her strong support to the campaign.
Launched in 2022, the No Child Left Behind campaign aims to address the daily struggles of child poverty within schools by ensuring every primary-aged child receives free meals. Currently, the scheme guarantees free lunches only to pupils in reception, year one, and year two. Beyond year two, eligibility depends on household benefits, which leaves many children without support.
Tania Yasmin, executive headteacher at Greet Primary School in Birmingham, told BirminghamLive, “Would you tolerate this for your own children and your own families? If not, then you have a duty not to tolerate this for all the children you serve.”

Yasmin highlights that other regions, like London and Wales, already provide free school meals to all primary pupils. She argues that extending the program nationwide would remove stigma attached to free meals and reduce bureaucratic hurdles that prevent some eligible families from accessing the support they need.
“There are families who may be eligible but don’t apply due to the complexity and lack of understanding of the system, which adds pressure on schools,” she explained.
Yasmin emphasizes that offering free school meals to every primary child represents a significant investment in closing the disadvantage gap. “If a child is hungry, they won’t be able to learn effectively. This should be a priority before any other initiatives.”
The government plans to expand free school meals in September to children in households receiving Universal Credit, but campaigners argue this falls short of addressing the wider issue.
No Child Left Behind is currently urging residents across Birmingham and beyond to support the petition calling for free school meals for all primary school children, as a vital step toward eradicating child hunger and inequality.
