A halal butcher’s shop in Birmingham has been ordered to shut its doors after an inspection revealed a serious cockroach infestation alongside signs of rodent activity.
During a visit to Al-Aqsa Halal Meat on Showell Green Lane, Sparkhill, council inspectors uncovered an “active infestation of cockroaches and mouse droppings at all levels over containers of prepared food.” The findings prompted swift action due to concerns over public health.
On Monday, 24 August, Birmingham Magistrates' Court granted a hygiene emergency prohibition order, citing an “imminent risk of injury to health.” As a result, the premises were closed in compliance with the order and its shutters were pulled down.

A Birmingham City Council spokesperson commented, “On 18 August 2026, officers inspected Al-Aqsa Halal Meat following concerns raised during an inspection of a nearby establishment. Evidence of cockroach and rodent activity was found, which presented an imminent risk to health. Consequently, a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice was served.”
The spokesperson added, “The court has now enforced the prohibition order to ensure the premises remain closed until all health risks have been adequately addressed.”
Previously, in May 2025, the butcher received a Food Hygiene rating of one, indicating that major improvements were necessary. At that time, hygienic food handling was deemed satisfactory, and the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building were rated as good. However, management of food safety required significant improvement.
The council continues to monitor the situation closely to safeguard public health and ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
