Birmingham Grand Central Tortilla Restaurant Fails Hygiene Inspection Due to Mouse Droppings

A Birmingham city centre branch of the Tortilla Mexican Grill chain has failed a hygiene inspection due to evidence of pest activity, including mouse droppings found in multiple areas.

The Grand Central Tortilla location received a Food Standards Agency hygiene score of 2 on March 2, indicating that improvement is necessary. This rating is considered a fail, as passing businesses typically score 3 or above. At the time of the inspection, this was the only branch among Tortilla’s 50-plus UK sites to be rated below satisfactory.

Despite pest control checks being recorded on the inspection day, the inspector found mouse droppings on seven different surfaces, including worktops, near wrapped food containers, and adjacent to vinegar bottles. The local authority recommended that the restaurant increase the frequency of pest checks throughout the day and arrange a professional pest control visit promptly.

Tortilla, known for its Mexican-inspired burritos, quesadillas, and nachos, expressed frustration over the situation. A spokesperson said, “We place a strong emphasis on maintaining high standards and consistently achieving five-star ratings across our restaurants. We are working with relevant authorities to resolve these issues affecting the centre and surrounding areas.”

The restaurant has since introduced immediate measures such as enhanced team training, strengthened pest control procedures, and continuous monitoring to ensure food safety. Tortilla is committed to restoring its five-star rating and maintaining the highest levels of hygiene and customer experience moving forward.
