Birmingham Grammar School Breaks Into England’s Top 100 Secondary Schools

King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys in Birmingham has been recognized as one of the top 100 secondary schools in England. This prestigious ranking comes from a comprehensive study by The Telegraph that evaluated thousands of schools across the country.

The ranking criteria included GCSE results, attendance rates, and class sizes, highlighting schools that excel academically and provide supportive learning environments. King Edward VI Handsworth’s inclusion is a testament to its reputation for academic excellence and strong pastoral care.

Among the West Midlands schools, only four made the top 100: King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys, King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Boys (27th), King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls (45th), and Queen Mary’s High School in Walsall (48th).

At its latest Ofsted inspection in April 2024, King Edward VI Handsworth was rated outstanding for quality of education and personal development, and good in other areas. Inspectors praised the school’s nurturing atmosphere and the emphasis on core values such as aspiration, respect, and endeavour.

According to Ofsted, “Caring and supportive relationships are at the heart of the school. Pupils feel safe and report that poor behaviour is rare. One parent described it as a ‘Brilliant school’ with a ‘Great nurturing environment.’”

The report also highlighted the school’s ambitious curriculum designed to meet the needs of all students, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), as well as sixth-form pupils. Staff are committed to maintaining high expectations and helping students achieve their full academic potential.

This recognition adds to the long-standing prestige of King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys and exemplifies its dedication to fostering both academic success and personal growth.
