Birmingham Good Samaritans Rescue Land Rover from Perilous Flood Waters

Two quick-thinking friends from Birmingham, Daniel Smith and Daniel Mulqueen, took swift action to rescue a Land Rover stranded in dangerous floodwaters amid Storm Claudia.

On the evening of Saturday, November 15, the pair noticed the abandoned vehicle stuck in the swollen river waters along Green Road in Hall Green. Concerned by the driver’s unknown whereabouts, they chose to return the following morning to carry out the rescue.

Arriving with their own 4x4 vehicles, Daniel Smith, 37, and Daniel Mulqueen, 27—friends for over a decade—worked together to pull the Land Rover out of the floodwaters. Their familiarity with the area near Sarehole Mill, coupled with regular patrols during adverse weather, has often positioned them as local Good Samaritans.

“We frequently see cars stuck here, even in typical rainy conditions,” said Smith, a local car mechanic. He explained the hidden dangers posed by the strong currents beneath the bridge on Green Road. “The water’s current is deceptively strong. In seconds, it can catch a vehicle and drag it under the bridge, putting riders at severe risk.”

Although the driver was absent when they rescued the car, a note with a phone number left in the window confirmed the vehicle’s owner.

Smith issued a caution to drivers, urging them to avoid flooded routes altogether if there is any uncertainty. “If you have any doubts, don’t enter the water—it simply isn’t worth the risk,” he stressed.
