Birmingham Girl’s Courageous Journey to Honor Her Late Mum

Ten-year-old Isabel Lee from Birmingham has embarked on a heartfelt mission to honor the memory of her mother, Sarah, who sadly passed away from cancer last year. Sarah, a dedicated teacher in Birmingham’s Kingstanding area, was just 48 when she was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

Sarah’s health began to decline when she started experiencing balance issues, which led to an MRI scan revealing brain tumors. Despite the family’s hope and bravery, Sarah passed away months later. Inspired by her mother’s strength and kindness, Isabel is now determined to make a difference.

Isabel is training to take part in the upcoming Great Midlands Fun Run in Sutton Coldfield on May 31, where she will run 8.5 miles—a distance far beyond anything she has attempted before. She aims to raise funds for St Giles Hospice, a charity her mother deeply believed in and that supported her family during Sarah’s illness.

“Last year, my mum died from cancer,” Isabel shares. “She was the best mum—always kind, funny, and knew how to make me smile. Watching her fight was really hard, but she was brave, and I want to be brave like her. Running this distance will be tough, but I’ll think of her cheering me on.”

Isabel’s father, Richard Lee, recounts the family’s difficult journey. Initially misdiagnosed with labyrinthitis, Sarah underwent an MRI scan revealing tumors spreading from an unknown primary site, possibly the lungs. Sarah’s diagnosis came in January 2025, and she passed away during the Easter holidays. Isabel and her siblings, including her twin brother and an elder brother, were gently informed about their mother’s condition piece by piece.

Though Isabel missed last year’s fun run registration, she was resolute about participating in the 2026 event. So far, she has raised over £2,000 for St Giles Hospice. Her dedication reflects the spirit Sarah nurtured in her children. Isabel’s involvement in taekwondo, hockey, and acro dance, combined with her determination, fuels her preparation for the challenge ahead.

Richard expresses pride in his children’s resilience. “They are polite, respectful, and well-behaved. Isabel’s decision to support St Giles was entirely her own—her mum wanted to go there but didn’t get the chance. It’s a charity close to our hearts.”

Family support has been vital during this time. Richard’s employer has accommodated his needs, while Sarah’s parents have helped care for the children. Through the pain, the family remains focused on maintaining normalcy in the children’s activities.

Isabel’s story is one of courage, love, and the power of remembrance. She hopes every donation, no matter how small, will help provide comfort to other families facing similar battles and continue the compassionate work of St Giles Hospice.
