Birmingham Food and Drink Weekly Briefing: Navigating the Birmingham Avalanche

Hello Food Club friends, Kirsty here! After a power walk through the city in scorching 100-degree heat—complete with an Anderson and Hill sandwich mishap—I’m back with your latest Birmingham food and drink briefing.

You might be wondering about the so-called Birmingham Avalanche. No, it’s not a weather event, but rather the wave of venue closures sweeping across the city. When Andreas Antona predicted this avalanche over a month ago, it seemed daunting—and since then, we’ve seen at least nine venues shut their doors. That number likely doesn’t include smaller, family-run spots in quieter corners that have quietly closed without much notice.

One heartbreaking story this week came from The Billesley, where staff were blindsided by the pub’s sudden closure and boarding up of its windows. We reached out to the brewery for comment, but details on how staff were informed remain unclear. Having spoken with those affected, I can say that the emotional toll on staff is deeply upsetting. You can read the full interview for more insight.

This week’s sunshine may have justified my £400 splurge on premium iced drinks along New Street—a small price to pay to beat the heat! The new public realm flooring at the top end of town reflects the sun so intensely, it’s almost blinding.

Among my favorite cooling treats is the new watermelon yuzu drink at Blank Street—refreshingly delicious. Bird and Blend’s new iced tea lineup is equally impressive, especially their uniquely Brummie Custard flavor. A personal favorite: their Cherry Cola Bottles option, pricey but simply wonderful.

In other news, the Mostly Jazz Funk and Soul Festival has reversed its no-alcohol pop policy for the weekend, thanks to public feedback. That change will definitely make a difference during this heatwave.

One of my favorite discoveries recently is a charming neighborhood-within-the-neighborhood destination where iced coffee costs less than £2. It’s home to a wildlife center, performing arts space, gym, sports hall, and even a resident chameleon named Jafar. Truly a dream spot!

Finally, keep an eye on Stirchley, where McDonald’s is mounting a fresh bid to establish itself in the area after previously withdrawing their application. They promise a new approach this time—details remain to be seen.

That’s your update for now—stay cool, stay curious, and catch you next week!
