Hello Food Club friends! It’s Kirsty here, delighted to be back after a couple of weeks away, ready to share the latest buzz from the city’s food and drink scene. How have you all been?
On my recent stroll around Birmingham, I noticed several changes that have taken place during my absence.
Perhaps the most notable update is that the Shokupan signage has finally been removed from Grand Central following nearly a year of closure. In its place, a new venture is preparing to launch: Bunsik, a Korean street food eatery, will be opening its doors in the same location above New Street Station. This spot sits just next to the Grand Central Nando’s.

Speaking of Nando’s, did you hear that the Bullring branch, a longstanding fixture since the incarnation of the ‘new’ Bullring, is currently closed? I’ve reached out to the company for details regarding a potential reopening with a refreshed interior, but they have not yet shared any information.
Additionally, there has been another recent closure at the Bullring venue since we last discussed the market.
On New Street, I observed a bustling queue outside the recently opened Maki and Ramen, which celebrated its grand opening last Friday. The long lines of eager diners throughout the week testify to its popularity among Brummies eager to sample the new offering.
Although I didn’t dine extensively during my break, I did take some visiting friends to Cherry Reds after discovering it had been locally listed for its charm. They were thrilled with the experience, enjoying generous vegan-friendly pancakes and sausage outdoors in the sunshine, all at prices that genuinely surprised them compared to London.
Cherry Reds truly remains a gem in our city.
