Hello, Food Club friends! Kirsty here, welcoming you on this gloomy, chilly day. How are you holding up? I must admit, the colder weather has been a bit of a challenge, but thankfully, the prospect of hearty, warming meals is cheering me up as we transition into the season.
Since I anticipate a pasta-focused diet over the coming months, I’m excited to share that Chef Shawky, known as Pavarotti’s favourite pasta maestro, has given his Erdington restaurant a fresh makeover after departing from La Galleria, Roundhouse. He’s bringing a taste of Bologna right here to Birmingham - read on for the latest from his venture.
Moving from pasta to pub fare, there’s news from the Gas Street area. Joule’s Brewery acquired the former Bistrot Pierre building last year and took time to connect with the community before making changes. Now, they’re gearing up for big updates - including offering Sunday roasts - which is sure to please locals.

On a less positive note, Browns restaurant at the Bullring has sadly closed. This Spiceal Street venue had been a fixture for 15 years, serving customers near St Martin’s Church. The closure has left fans disappointed - we’ve captured their reactions.
Beyond the city centre, I want to highlight an ongoing concern about Loaf, the beloved independent bakery in Stirchley. It has been a staple on our food scene for years, but uncertainties remain regarding its permanent home. I’ve been following up with Green Square Accord, the housing association involved, and although some small updates have been provided, the situation remains unresolved.
Now for some uplifting news from Harborne: a new LEGO-themed café has opened, offering a delightful space where visitors of all ages can build with full LEGO sets or free play bricks. Unlike the LEGO Discovery Centre, there’s no age restriction here, making it perfect for creative kids and adults alike.
Lastly, it seems the city centre’s sushi scene is booming with another new sushi restaurant opening. By my count, that brings six sushi options within walking distance - certainly something for sushi lovers to celebrate.
