Birmingham Father Sentenced After Threatening Daughter’s Bully and Her Family

John Downing, a 39-year-old father of four from Erdington, Birmingham, has been handed a suspended prison sentence and a restraining order after making serious threats against the family of his daughter’s school bully.

The incident came to light after Downing sent a chilling message to the 12-year-old girl, telling her, “I’m going to burn your house, I will stab your family and I will slit all your family’s necks.” This message was in response to ongoing bullying his daughter had endured, escalating tensions after a verbal dispute on Snapchat.

On March 14, Downing’s anger intensified when he arrived at the bully’s home accompanied by an aggressive dog, further intimidating the girl’s mother and other children residing there.

Following his guilty plea to threatening to damage or destroy property, Downing faced Birmingham Magistrates' Court on June 12, where he was sentenced to a two-month prison term, suspended for 12 months. This means he will avoid jail unless he commits another offense within the year. Additionally, the court imposed a restraining order forbidding him from contacting the bully’s family and ordered him to complete 20 rehabilitation activity days.

Defense counsel highlighted mitigating factors during the plea hearing, explaining that Downing’s reactions stemmed from impulsivity amid prolonged stress caused by his daughter’s persistent bullying. The lawyer also disclosed Downing’s struggle with mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression, which contributed to his loss of control.

“He has not entered the property or made direct threats to the complainant’s daughter beyond the messages,” the defense stated. “His mental health issues and the constant bullying his daughter faced were significant factors leading to his regrettable actions.”

The victim, meanwhile, reported feeling “very scared and worried a lot” following the threats, underscoring the impact the incident had on her well-being.

Downing now faces the challenge of rebuilding trust and managing his mental health while complying with the court’s conditions to avoid further legal consequences.
