Birmingham is stepping up its efforts to improve road safety by expanding the network of average speed cameras across the city. In a bid to crackdown on speeding and reduce traffic-related incidents, the city council has announced the installation of cameras in six new locations.
These new cameras will complement existing speed enforcement points that already catch thousands of speeding motorists each year. Installation is underway, with cameras set to become operational over the coming months.
This expansion is part of a broader safety initiative which has seen a 30mph speed limit implemented on the majority of the city’s main roads. Additionally, measures such as banning pavement parking in certain areas are being introduced to further enhance pedestrian safety.

Councillor Majid Mahmood, cabinet member for environment and transport, emphasized the council’s commitment: “When we declared a road safety emergency, we promised decisive action. Installing these cameras targets reckless drivers putting lives at risk by speeding.
“There is no excuse for dangerous driving. Too many lives have been lost due to a few irresponsible motorists, and this must stop. Our message is clear: Slower is safer. Adhering to speed limits saves lives.”
These new average speed cameras will help enforce speed limits, making Birmingham’s roads safer for all residents and visitors.
