Learner drivers face their toughest challenges at Birmingham’s Garretts Green driving test centre, data reveals. Between January 2024 and March 2025, this centre recorded a staggering 209,523 faults — the highest number anywhere in the UK — significantly surpassing the next highest, with just over 158,000 faults.
Another Birmingham location, Kingstanding Centre, ranks third nationwide with 135,036 faults, indicating the city’s driving tests may be particularly demanding or that many learners struggle with key driving skills in this area.
A driving test failure occurs when a learner accumulates 16 or more minor faults or commits even a single serious or dangerous fault. Most faults at these centres relate to poor observation at junctions, including pulling out without checking for hazards. Other common errors involve improper mirror use and unsafe moving off.

An Evans Halshaw spokesperson emphasized that while many learners focus on vehicle control, success hinges equally on awareness and decision-making. Junctions, often considered one of the most complex driving situations, require anticipation, careful observation, and quick, safe judgments. Even minor distractions here can lead to serious faults.
For test candidates, building confidence and practice in real traffic scenarios—especially at junctions, mirror checks, and reacting safely to other road users—is crucial for success. Additionally, the driving test begins before setting off; simple requirements like eyesight tests can end the exam prematurely if neglected.
