Birmingham Drivers Face New 31mph Speed Limit Warning

Drivers across Birmingham are being urged to take heed of new, lower speed limits implemented on many major roads throughout the city. Recent changes have reduced most 40mph zones down to 30mph, meaning motorists risk fines even for travelling at 31mph on streets where 40mph was previously allowed.

The new limits affect key routes including parts of A34 Walsall Road, A38 Bristol Road South, and A456 Hagley Road West, among others. Clear signage has been installed to alert drivers to these changes, and police patrols are expected to enforce compliance rigorously.

This initiative is part of a broader crackdown on dangerous driving, which also includes installing additional average speed cameras across Birmingham. While police often apply a “10% plus 2mph” tolerance—allowing up to 35mph in a 30mph zone—this is not guaranteed and remains at officers' discretion.
